11 Ways to Celebrate Women’s History Month in Milwaukee

1. Women’s History Month Film Series
THROUGHOUT MARCH | ORIENTAL THEATER
All month long, Milwaukee Film is celebrating trailblazing women filmmakers with a festival of directorial debuts. The series includes work from women across the world, including Lucrecia Martel (La Ciénaga), Agnès Varda (La Pointe Courte), Susan Seidelman (Smithereens), Cauleen Smith (Drylongso) and Chloé Zhao (Songs My Brother Taught Me).
2. Women of the Pabst Mansion
SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS IN MARCH AT 1:30 P.M. | PABST MANSION
You may have heard the stories of Captain or Fredrick Pabst, but the famous family owes a lot of their success to the women working behind the scenes in their business and their homes. This tour highlights the women of the Pabst family and their female servants. The tour also touches on female artists and artistic depictions of women as well as the culture and social norms during the late 19th century.
3. International Women’s Day Celebration
MARCH 8 AT 12:30 P.M. | MARCUS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
The Women’s Leadership Collaborative is heading up this International Women’s Day event. The afternoon will include a speech by keynote speaker Emile Aries about the ongoing fight for equal pay. Additionally, they will host an activity surrounding their theme of #InspireInclusion. Participants can head to St. Kate’s after the event for happy hour and networking.
4. International Women’s Day Music Takeover
MARCH 8 6 A.M.-6 P.M. | ON AIR AT 88.9
Women are taking over the airwaves at 88.9 Radio Milwaukee this International Women’s Day. DJ Dori Zori and special guests are playing 12 straight hours of women musicians across all genres. Included in the special day is a live performance from Mary Timony of Helium and Ex Hex celebrating her new album, Untame the Tiger on Merge Records. The performance will take place at their Walker’s Point stage at noon.
5. Celebrate Women in Bier
MARCH 8 FROM 5-7 P.M. | CAFE CENTRAAL
Cafe Centraal is highlighting the women who make the Brew City run. Talks from Rochelle Britt from New Glarus and Ileana Rivera from Lowlands Group are kicking off the night. A live performance from Reyna will also take place. They are featuring five beers that are brewed by or inspired by women, including New Belgium: Le Terrior, 3 Sheeps: Lady Lupulin, New Glarus: Spotted Cow Grand Cru, Revolution Brewing: Pragueress and Val-Dieu: Blonde. One dollar from each beer purchase, as well as the proceeds from their silent auction, will go to the Sojourner Truth House.
6. Let’s Talk Womxn: Live Out Loud
MARCH 8 AT 6 P.M. | DENIZEN MKE
Do you have dinner plans for International Women’s Day? Let’s Talk Womxn is a national group of women restaurateurs that are banding together to build community and economic power. This year, they’re celebrating International Women’s Day with this food-centric event. Twenty different local women-owned food businesses including Flour Girl and Flame, Palomino Bar, Seven Swans Creperie and Charcuter-Me will put together a giant grazing table for guests to enjoy. In addition to the spread, the event will feature a drag show, butt portraits by RASIllustrates and a set by DJ Livid.
7. Women’s Month Night at the Gallery
MARCH 14 FROM 5-7 P.M. | DAVID BARNETT GALLERY
David Barnett Gallery is celebrating Women’s History Month with a free-to-the-public night at their gallery. Free wine is included in the event, and if you come with a friend, you’ll receive a gallery gift. The event is raising money and physical donations for the Sojourner Family Peace Center. The drive accepts hygiene products, clothes and art supplies and runs through April 11.
8. GEMS ONLY: Where My Girls At?
MARCH 16 FROM 9 P.M.-1 A.M. | THE COOPERAGE
DJs Gemini Gilly, Dripsweat and Lolo are leading this Women’s History Month celebration with an all-night, all-women set at the Cooperage. The night will feature timeless classics, amapiano, hip-hop, house, and lots of remixes. Everyone’s invited to the dance floor, but make sure to grab a ticket first.
9. Women’s Cycling & Workout Clothing Swap
MARCH 17 FROM NOON-4 P.M. | WHEEL & SPROCKET
Women’s Cycling Group, Cadence, and Wheel & Sprocket are on a mission to make cycling more accessible for women. Participants can bring gently used activewear, workout gear, and bike accessories to their Bayview location for a swap to give women what they need to get out on the bike. Joy Ride Cafe will be open for drink purchases, and Cadence members will be on-site to answer any questions.
10. Women in Wine: Red Edition
MARCH 17 FROM 2-4 P.M. | MARN ART + CULTURE HUB
The Wine Academy is teaming up with the folks at MARN to celebrate the women of the industry who are making an impact on the world of red wines. The ticket includes tastings of four selected red wines, as well as an explanation of the origin and history of each type.
11. Kenosha Women’s Market
MARCH 24 FROM NOON-5 P.M. | CHURCH & MARKET
Head south to attend Church & Market’s Women’s Market where a dozen women-owned businesses, including Koval Distillery, Blue House Books and One Artsy Cookie, will be selling their wares. There will be tastings from Koval Distillery, and even a local Girl Scout Troop so you can get your cookie fix.
